Philips are hoping to take a further hold on the LED TV market with the introduction of two new sets to add to their already impressive 9000 LED Pro Series lineup.
Shipping in December 2009 will be the 40 inch 40PFL9704 and the 46 inch 46PFL9704 televisions.

On paper the features are truly impressive and will surely give the likes of Samsung and Sony a run for their money.

Lets take a look at what they are offering:

Full HD 1920 × 1080p resolution

200Hz Refresh Rate

1ms Response Rate

Full LED Backlighting

Ambilight Spectra 3

5,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast

179″ Viewing Angle

5 HDMI Sockets

2 SCART Sockets

4 Built-in Speakers

Net TV with Integrated Wi-Fi wireless connectivity

Built in Tuner Support for DVB-Terrestrial and DVB-Cable

Being a Full Back-lit where the LEDs are situated along the whole of the rear of the set we are expecting a really impressive picture from these sets. Of course there is a trade off in slimness when compared with the popular Samsung Egde-lit TVs but these sets are quoted at being 89mm in depth so they are a move in the right direction.

Coupled with the now defacto energy saving qualities of LCD LED back-lit televisions this latest range of stunning looking Philips LED TVs will certainly cause a stir in what is now becoming a very competitive market.

This is definitely one of the best set of specifications to come out this year and as you can expect they have prices to match.

The 40PFL9704 will retail at around £1799.00 and the 46PFL9704 will be a whopping £2499.00 .

Lets hope that when they hit the shops the reviews live up to the expectations.

Back in August the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the UK governing body for everything to do with advertising on television and print claimed that Samsung had misled consumers in their latest adverts for LED TVs.

It seems that a handful of people had made a complaint to the ASA on the way that Samsung had used the term LED TV in their recent TV and magazine ads. The main crux of the issue was the headline:
“Samsung LED TV Next Generation TV”

As detailed in our Guide to What is LED TV it should be stated that LED TV is in fact LED-backlit or LED-edgelit LCD TV. Now this may be confusing to some consumers, but it is hardly misleading. In the big world of commerce, finding an edge is what keeps most corporations alive.

Television technology is constantly evolving and you have to only walk into any Currys or John Lewis store and you will see the latest lineup of LCD TV’s being touted as LED TVs.
The damage has already been done and consumers are aware that the latest in-phrase when researching televisions will be LED TV regardless if it is an LCD panel or whatever. This was Samsungs main argument in response to the ASA decision to have them remove the LED TV tag in their campaigns.

Samsung have stated that they will continue to use LED TV in their adverts but will add info clarifying the technology used in the actual LCD TV’s.

In my book the LED TV as a moniker is here to stay.
